Key takeaways

The EON Prepaid Visa was discontinued on July 22, 2024. It no longer works for PayPal verification or anywhere else.
The deposit account is now just called "UnionBank Online Savings" with the same ₱0 maintaining balance, opened in the UnionBank Online app.
For digital-first banking with higher interest, UnionBank now points users toward UnionDigital Bank.
If you used your old EON Prepaid for PayPal, switch to Maya Mastercard or GCash Mastercard.

For more than a decade, "EON" was synonymous with online shopping for Filipinos: first as a deposit account, later as the prepaid Visa thousands of freelancers used to verify PayPal. In 2024 UnionBank quietly dismantled both halves of that legacy. This guide explains what each piece of EON has become in 2026 so you don’t follow outdated advice.

What happened to EON

In July 2024 UnionBank discontinued the EON Prepaid Visa retail product. Existing cardholders had to transfer balances back to a UnionBank deposit account via the UnionBank Online app. The deposit account itself continues, just without the "EON" name, and is opened in the same app.

If you only wanted PayPal verification

Switch to the Maya Mastercard or GCash Mastercard. Both are free virtual and physical cards, both accept the PayPal ₱100 verification charge, and both are widely supported on international sites. See our PayPal verification guide for the step-by-step.
